Forum: GratefulDead Subject: What is the "Nine Jam"?

I came across a thread in another website's forum regarding people's favorite version of Eyes. One poster made mention of the "Nine Jam". I figured that it had to do with 1973-74 versions of the song. But, could someone explain specifically what this is as I've never seen it mentioned elsewhere.

Thanks,
Frank

i'm not sure, but i think it might actually be mostly in 7. sounds to me like 7 bars of 7 and one of 6 before going back to straight time. the dudes were getting tricky with time.

my guess would be something to do with the
time signature of that paticular jam.do you
know the exact date for it?would like to check
it out.more on time signatures http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_signature

hey frank!!!

YES! it is true! if you count out the RIFF PART they go to during the end jam of EYES OF THE WORLD it is in 9/8

time signatures are not really fractions. they are more like relative values.... anyway, if you count out the beat on this version of [...]EOTW to 8 beats per measure, you will see, when they go into the riff there is an extra beat

that's what makes it sound a bit jagged.... there is an "odd" break in the flow of the music. but i dont think the TIME SIGNATURE IS IMPORTANT.

the dead played in many unusual, (to western ears) time signatures... most successfully, (to my ears) in [...] ESTIMATED PROPHET ...... where they maintain a relatively strict adherence to the meter... (7/4) a phrase that covers 7 beats played to eloquent heights, at least on occasion...

BUT THE GOAL is never to play in a time sig for the sake of it... all the dead's off-meter excursions are born naturally, an expression of an idea that falls a beat or two too long.... and what is [...] PLAYIN IN THE BAND, the long luxurious 10 beat phrase taken to full-on free jazz meltdown? but the odd 5 turned around even again......
